THE director of the Whitechapel Mission, Tony Miller has been made an MBE in the Queen’s New Year Honours. Now in his 30th year at Whitechapel, Mr Miller said the award was a “fantastic honour” and he was looking forward to a really special experience at Buckingham Palace. “I am grateful to all those who work, volunteer, support and serve the Whitechapel Mission, as they are the true deservers of this recognition,” he said.

Day Out to Southend-on-Sea

On Friday 16th July the Ladies of the Whitechapel Ladies Day had a marvellous day out in Southend on Sea.

18 of our regular ladies along with 10 volunteers from Lloyds of London and the Bank of New York Mellon took a coach (very generously funded by Lloyds of London) which left Whitechapel at 9am on a beautiful sunny morning.

The ladies had been paying 50p a week for twelve weeks to help "pay their way". On the coach we were able to give everyone a goodie bag filled with water, snacks, piece of fruit, wet wipes, sun hat and sun cream. Also, because of the generosity of our funders, we were able to give back all the 50p's (£6 per person) to the ladies to give them a little spending money.

At midday, we all enjoyed a fish n chip lunch on the sea front with bread and butter washed down with a hot cup of tea.

We then split up into smaller groups, each pair of volunteers to 2 ladies, to go off and enjoy the day. Each group had a whale of a time! Playing bingo, walking along the longest pier in Europe, (1 mile long); even pensioners on the roller coaster!

At 3pm we re-boarded the coach and were welcomed at Leigh on Sea Methodist Church by the kind ladies of the church who provided all with a scrumptious afternoon tea with homemade cakes.

The week before the Whitechapel ladies had made an artificial flower arrangement in a basket along with a card that was signed by each lady to present as a way of thank you. The stewards were moved to tears on presentation of the gift and were invited to return next year.

A very tired group of ladies got back to Whitechapel at 6pm, enjoyed by all, staff and volunteers included. A very humbling experience, a simple day made extra special by the kindness of all involved.
