Operation Poncho
Perhaps you have been following the
story about the tough new regime for people sleeping rough in the City, covered
recently in the Pavement? (See Pavement website current issue,
page 4) People are being woken early each morning and told
to move their belongings so that their sleeping place can be washed down.
Apparently all the doorways being targeted have been washed already, late the
previous evening. Operation Poncho is described on the City of London
Police website as a a multi-agency approach to reduce begging and
vagrancy within the City of London by ensuring that those involved received
support from drug and welfare agencies. Those who are quoted in the
Pavement clearly view the true aim as getting them to move
elsewhere.
Get fit and make a difference
Whitechapel looking for
runners
Want to lose a few of those extra pounds
gained over Christmas? Considering getting back down the gym in the hope of
looking good for our summer holiday.
Why not consider getting fit and
making a difference for London's homeless. The Whitechapel Mission will be
entering a team of runners in this event in the hope of raising much-needed
funds to continue its work amongst London's homeless.
During it's brief
Eight year history, the annual British 10k London Run has quickly grown to
become the third most significant mass participation road race in the UK. It is
staged on the world's greatest route, which no other road race over any
distance can match. The race route passes many of London's most famous historic
landmarks, and is run on some of the most famous street names in the
world!
