Breakfast volunteering |
 |
There are many tasks that our
volunteers can assist us within in our daycentre. We open our doors at 6am each
morning and expect to see over 200 people at this time of year. We need to
prepare and serve over 150 cooked breakfasts each day. Many of our volunteers
are professionals in the city and will arrive between 6 & 7.30am and will
assist our staff with the preparing and serving of breakfast. Some will need to
leave by 8.30 - 9am so that they can go to work.
|
Others can assist in
the clothing store. There is a constant need for clothing to be sorted,
measured and sized and hung, ready for distribution. This is a task that can be
carried out at any time of the day and many volunteers will choose to arrive
later in the morning and stay longer.
We do not know how many will
arrive on any given day. It may be as few as fifty or as high as two hundred
and fifty, but we feel that if there is only one person knocking on our door
then we should open that door and make them welcome.
We do have a car
park available for your vehicles.
It is important that group numbers
should not exceed four. We ask that volunteers are over 16 and under 150, but
are able to spend a long time on their feet.
Alternatively, you could
consider a Team Challenge.
If you have an interest in getting people in
your organisation to work more effectively as a team, would like an icebreaker
to integrate new members into your group or would just like to organise a fun
day out, then the Whitechapel Team Challenge experience could be just what you
are looking for.
The Whitechapel Team
Challenge offers an unusual and cost-effective alternative to the myriad of
outdoor 'corporate training' days now on offer. Your employees will join
regular Whitechapel staff - making a real difference for some of London's
homeless while working as a team and having fun. |
 |
The first task of the day will be to
prepare and serve breakfast. This requires the preparation and cooking of
bacon, sausages, beans, tomatoes and eggs, mushrooms, hash browns. Buttering of
bread and making of toast. We will make and serve over 400 cups of tea, and 300
cups of coffee.
At 8am, some of the group will serve breakfast, while
others continue to cook more breakfasts and others will collect plates, wipe
tables and wash up. There will be a rush at 8am for breakfast, which will last
for about 20-30 minutes and then continue for the next two hours at a steady
rate.
During all of the morning, we will be giving out towels, soap,
razors, shampoo and toothbrushes.
At about 10:30am we can begin to clean
the kitchens down and prepare it for the next day. |
By 11am the centre
will close and we will begin the big clean-up. The Dinning area will need to be
swept and mopped. The toilets will need to be cleaned and hosed. The shower
area will need to be cleaned and prepared for the following morning.
By
11:30 we should be able finished for the day.
